The more agency founders I talk to, the more convinced I am of one of the core insights that led to me starting OTTESU.
Agencies are founded by 2 types of people:
A fantastic ‘do-er’. Someone who is a great practitioner of their craft, and absolutely passionate about it. They leave and breath ‘the work’.
A sales/relationship building expert. They love new business, enjoy the hunt, are always focused on building relationships and growing businesses through solving client problems.
There’s sometimes a cross-over, but it’s a classic Venn diagram. They’re two pretty distinct skillsets.
Underlying that, neither of those people start an agency because they love ‘running a business’. They might want to grow something of their own, do work their own way, solve client problems better than the next agency; but spending time ‘running a business’ was never the plan.
